Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Database list all Officer Candidate Schools and Classes?
Answer: No, the Database does not list all OCS Schools and Classes. The Database lists only those OCS Schools and classes that we have been able to obtain graduation records and there are varying degrees of information available for each of the Schools and classes based upon the information we have been able to verify.
- Infantry OCS Ft Benning, GA: 1941-1947 and 1951-1973 all classes
- Branch Immaterial/Federal OCS Ft Benning/Moore, GA: 1973-present all classes
- Artillery OCS Ft Sill, OK: 1941-1946 and 1951-1973 all classes
- Signal OCS Ft Monmouth, NJ: 1941-1946 and 1952-1953 all classes
- Signal OCS Ft Jackson, SC: 1966-1968 all classes
- Armor OCS Ft Knox, KY: 1966-1968 all classes
- Engineer OCS Ft Belvoir, VA: 1941-1971
- Quartermaster OCS Ft Lee, VA: 1966-1968 all classes
- Transportation OCS Ft Eustis, VA: 1966-1968 all classes
- Ordnance OCS Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD: 1966-1968 (5 of 36 classes)
- WAC OCS: Little found. WAC Museum not interested in helping.
With the exception of Infantry, Artillery, Engineer, and Signal OCS's other classes during WWII conducted at other than the main Branch Schools have not yet been accounted for. Also during WWII there were additional Officer Candidate Schools activated in the continental United States for Coast Artillery, Cavalry, Tank Destroyer, Medical Administration, Finance, Judge Advocate General, Adjutant General, as well as overseas OCS's conducted such as in Australia, New Caledonia, Fiji Islands, England, and France.
The Army Ground General School at Ft Riley, KS 1947-1951 also yet to be accounted for.
Where do you get the Class and attendee names for the database?
Answer:
- School Academic Records. Provide class, graduation date, academic honors, numbers recycled or relieved. (With the exception of Infantry OCS, mostly not available, and those that are especially those from 1941-1970s are in bad shape).
- Class Books. Provide names of attendees of class and in some cases Branch commissioned, but not all classes had class books and those that did had attendees recycled in or out or relieved between the time the class book was submitted for publication and the class graduated.
- Graduation Programs. Provide date of graduation, names of graduates and in some cases Class Academic Honors and Branch commissioned.
- Branch OCS Associations. Artillery, Signal, and Engineer OCS Associations have done a masterful job in documenting their classes from 1941 through closing of their Branch Schools and Armor, Quartermaster, and Transportation for their classes during the Vietnam era.
What type of data is documented for each graduate and how is this data obtained?
Answer:
We begin with Name, Graduation Date, and Academic Honors from sources noted above then use Army Registers to obtain Service Numbers, Basic Pay Entry Date to determine length of service from enlistment until graduation from OCS, Education Level, and Birth Date to determine age at graduation. Even though all information in the Army Register is in the Public Domain we do not use actual dates, only years of service or age in years.
There are two versions of Army Registers that we use. Volume I and Volume II. Volume I is for Regular Army and beginning in 1968 Volume II lists Reserve Officers of which OCS graduates are commissioned. Volume I can be used to verify graduates who were later received Regular Army commissions.
Until 1970 these Registers were published on 1 January of each year and listed all officers on active duty as the 31 December of the preceding year and could be found on the internet through https://catalog.hathitrust.org/. In 1970 when Service numbers were changed to Social Security Numbers the Registers were considered to have personal information and were removed from the web and only available at selected libraries. Publication of the Registers was also changed to being published every two years.
We have been able to find Registers published by the Library of Congress through 1976 with the Social Security Numbers Removed. Adding the data from Army Registers is very time consuming and we add that data as time allows.
