William O. Sporbert
Second Lieutenant · Infantry · Class 62 (1942)
Second Lieutenant William Otto Sporbert IN 62-1942 was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions on 13 October 1943 while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, Italy. Running into an area thickly planted with anti-personnel, concussion mines, he accidentally stepped on a mine and was blown bodily into the river. He was wounded and temporarily blinded from the shock. Upon receiving first aid, however, he set out to rejoin his platoon which by this time had moved forward. En route to his unit he paused to aid a wounded soldier and again accidentally exploded a mine. Although seriously wounded, Second Lieutenant Sporbert requested that other soldiers be treated before receiving first aid himself. His courage and determination to carry on despite his wounds inspired his platoon to greater effort in taking its objective.

Second Lieutenant · Army Ground General School (1950)
Second Lieutenant Edward Gerard Flanagan Army Ground General School 1950 was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions on 13 October 1952 while serving with 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, Korea. Painfully wounded in the abdomen, Lieutenant Flanagan refused to return to friendly lines. Instead, he continued to advance at the head of his men, leading them through a hail of fire to their objective. Then, while demolition crews placed explosive charges near the hostile fortifications, he charged forward alone to distract the enemy. Large numbers of hostile troops left their positions and swarmed towards him, but he single-handedly fought them back, killing at least five of the foes in a pitched, close-range battle.
