First Medal of Honor awarded In Vietnam

Colonel (then Captain) Roger Hugh Charles Donlon IN 3-59 received the Medal of Honor for actions on 6 July 1964 near while commanding Special Forces Detachment A-726 at Camp Nam Dong, Vietnam. This was both the first Medal of Honor awarded for service in Vietnam and the first award to a Special Forces officer. He was inducted into the OCS Hall of Fame in 1965

First Lieutenant Jon Walter Layton, III IN 11-67 died from wounds suffered in combat on 27 June 1968 while serving with Detachment A-404 (Cao Lanh), Company D, 5th Special Forces Group, RVN. He had been in country 144 days. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
