Lieutenant Colonel Charles Veryl Ickes (then First Lieutenant) was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism on 15 August 1950 while assigned to the Heavy Mortar Company, 5th Cavalry Regiment (Infantry), 1st Cavalry Division near Waegwan, Korea. He died in 1995 and is buried Arlington National Cemetery.
