✦ DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS ✦
James B. Webel
Colonel · Infantry · Class 38 (1942)
Colonel (then Captain) James Buell Webel IN 38-42 was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions on 26 September 1950 while serving as Operations Officer, 7th Cavalry Regiment (Task Force 777), 1st Cavalry Division, Korea. Captain Webel refused medical attention as he established cohesive defensive positions. Then, with a loaded bazooka, he proceeded to a point on the edge of the city where, from a range of approximately twenty-five yards, he fired alternately into two assaulting enemy tanks until they were destroyed. As enemy troops started withdrawing, Captain Webel dropped the bazooka and, from an exposed position on the road, opened fire with his submachinegun. Then he again refused medical attention until all other wounded persons were treated. He was inducted into the OCS Hall of Fame in 1965.
